Robert Hoge, Curator of North American Coins and Currency for the American Numismatic Society, will briefly survey the history and development of Indian peace medals, and investigate what the last of them, from the Civil War to the Harrison administration, can show us of the government's official relations with the tribes, circumstances of production and presentation of the medals themselves, and the perceptions the medals were intended to, or did in fact, convey in a world of change.
A booksigning will follow the lecture. Free with museum admission.
