The dean of California Impressionism, Edgar Payne came from humble origins. Born in 1883 in the Ozark Mountains of Missouri, his father was a carpenter and Payne came up through the construction trades as a teenager, teaching himself to paint along the way. Relocating to California after spending time in Texas and Chicago, he set out to make his fame in landscape painting. Historic photographs and images of Payne's works, along with film footage of the artist working en plein air, tell the story of a genius who embraced the painterly approach of the French Impressionists. Producer/Director Joshua V. Hassel, with narration by Michael Paglia and a number of art historians. 2012, Colorado Public Television. 57 minutes, documentary, not rated.
Joshua Hassel will introduce the film and respond to questions from the audience following the screening.
