Our nation's conflicted relationship with the iconic symbol of wild America – the Bison – is explored in this film. It recounts the near-destruction of the Lords of the Plains, in the late nineteenth century, from an estimated 30 million animals to a mere 23 individuals by 1885. Current obstacles of restoring herds to large tracts of land are addressed as well as the quest to do so. Producer Rita Pastore, director Doug Hawes-Davis, 2011, High Plains Films. 78 minutes, documentary-not rated.
Bob Pickering, Ph.D., Director of Curatorial Affairs and Public Programs, will provide an introduction and commentary.
