Part artist, part adventurer, part scientist, English naturalist Mark Catesby (1683-1749) was a pioneering figure in the scientific exploration of the New World. Begun more than 50 years before the American Revolution, his book, Natural History of Carolina, Florida & the Bahama Islands, was the first fully illustrated study of North American flora and fauna. This lush documentary features scholarly information juxtaposed with images of Catesby's colorplates and contemporary film footage of many species he recorded. This program is presented in conjunction with the exhibition Folio Editions: Art in the Service of Science. Produced by David Elliott, directed by Cynthia Neal and Chris Conder, 2007, Marsh Elder Productions, 53 minutes, documentary-not rated.
No registration is required. Seating is first-come, first-seated. Groups are welcome.
Free with museum admission.
