Gilcrease Museum, through its Speaking of Gilcrease program, welcomes clubs and
organizations to invite our museum volunteers to come to your meeting place or business
location with a visual presentation showing the artistic and historic treasures
of the museum's permanent collection. These presentations are free and at no cost
to you.

Trailblazer
Bags are fun, multimedia educational bags, which are available free at the museum's
front entrance. They are the perfect way for visitors of all ages to become
acquainted with the museum's collections and are designed with children in mind.

 The Trailblazer Bags Program consists of a theme-designated
backpack, a variety of activities to enjoy in the museum or at home and book called
ART PAGES, which offers a small sampling of art works from our collection related
to the specific topic. The ART PAGES booklet includes lots of different information
on each art piece, the artist and art techniques. Bags also include a subject-appropriate
Gilcrease Journal, touch objects from the Gilcrease Education Collection, samples
of various artistic materials and techniques and sketching materials.
In 2007 the Trailblazer Bag Program received the Oklahoma Museum Association
award for excellence in the category of educational programs.

Conceived on a grand scale, this silent film on the building of the first American transcontinental railroad elevated its director/producer John Ford to undisputed status as the creator of the Epic Western. With no formal artistic training, Charles Russell relied on his powers of observation, discipline and commitment, inspiration from magazine illustration and the work of earlier western artists including George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, Carl Wimar and Frederic Remington to produce an amazing array of works. This symposium will explore the many facets of this ‘cowboy artist.’

Carole Klein, Associate Curator of Art, will discuss Olaf Seltzer – the artist and the man – and the influences on his art and his life. Like many people, Seltzer had multiple interests rather than a singular focus. His affinity for science, geography, and history coupled with his skills as a machinist merged together in the adult artist. When he finally began to paint full time in his forties, he brought a multifaceted knowledge to his work.

Internships at Gilcrease Museum are available to university students completing a bachelor's degree, preparing for master's degree consideration, completing a master's degree, preparing for a doctoral degree or completing doctoral degree work. They are designed to provide students with on-site training in one or more of these areas: curatorial, education, registration, preparation, development, public relations and marketing. Interns are expected to assume directed responsibilities and demonstrate individual initiative in their area of choice/assignment.
